Combine experiential typography, poetry, light and shadows, the seasons, and art/architecture, and you have the One Day Poem Pavilion. It’s a dome-like structure with simple perforations on its surface, but with light and shadows, words are created underneath the piece, which change with the passing of time. Over the course of 24 hours, viewers get a poem in pieces, what can be referred to as “slow media”.

In this fast paced world, it is difficult to pause even for a few minutes. If a web site takes longer than a few seconds to load in the browser, we move on to another site. Designer, engineers, and scientists put a lot of effort in making things faster. However, our life is finite. Nature has its own speed. Humans cannot control it: we live underneath its providence. Slowness has its own value.

In the One Day Poem Pavilion, messages flow slowly because they follow the movement of the sun. These slow messages offer the audience time to meditate. We cannot force it to go fast. We should wait. We live under the laws of nature. Slowness affords us time to rethink our lives which are finite and valuable. While the poem is revealed slowly, the meaning will resonate with the audience.

The pavilion was created by Jiyeon Song as a graduate thesis. The poem, a Sijo (classical Korean poetry) translated into English, differs depending on the solar calendar. During the winter solstice, the poem’s theme is reflecting on the passing of time, and during the summer solstice, the theme is new life.

A 1930s prediction of fashion in the year 2000. Some of it is accurate, especially if you’re Lady Gaga. And men’s fashion is close enough, but they didn’t mention that women are “fitted with a telephone and radio” as well. Best part: “OUUH, SWISH!”

Crazy, creative inventions from the early 20th century.

Above (clockwise from top-left):

1. A Colt 38 revolver camera. The first point-and-shoot? Six photos taken with the camera are shown. New York, 1939.

2. A car featuring a shovel for pedestrians at the front bumper. This was created to decrease the number of pedestrian-related accidents. A scoop-and-run. Paris, 1924.

3. Why struggle to find a comfortable way to read while lying down? Glasses to read in bed. England, 1936.

4. Amphibious Bicycle. Can carry those 120lbs and lighter over land and sea. Paris, 1932.

5. Radio Hat. May be the first attempt at a Walkman. USA, 1931.

Shooting Myself: WEIMAR’s blog consists of photo collections that seem to revolve around a theme. This collection was titled ‘Shooting Myself’ and consisted of (mostly) self-portraits. As seen in theTweet Like Don Draper article by Design Taxi, two digital firms have created Tweephone, the first analogue Twitter client. It looks like a retro rotary phone, and uses old-school texting methods (hit 1 once for A, twice for B, etc). Except, you have to dial these letters in, obviously. A bit time consuming, but interesting.

Alexa Meade. No formal training in painting or photography. Paints clothing, then puts the painted clothing on people. Then she paints the people white, and re-paints features onto their faces. Then they pose in painted scenes and the scenarios get photographed. Painting, photography, performance, and installation, all rolled into one. Terry Border started out making wire sculptures out of wire and objects lying around, in 2006. The blog, Bent Objects, evolved into creating clever little scenarios, with the objects being more of the main focus than the wire. He tends to stick to pictures that tell an elaborate, twisted story. What started out as a side project ended up with publishing two books. Bent Objects: The Secret Life of Everyday Things (2009), and Bent Object of My Affection (2011). Click the photos to get a closer look!
